History Lessons….

...for the educationally challenged.

Some [young] fellow at another blog seems to think that Christianity did nothing for Western civilization except got out of the way after fighting the Age of Enlightenment.

I think I’ll provide some remedial education.....

I see the Christians continue to pretend that Christianity is somehow an author, rather than the defeated enemy, of the Enlightenment.

Actually, looking at it from another, more enlightened perspective, it was the monastic orders which preserved the books of ancient Romans and Greeks through the Dark Ages. That period of anarchy and barbarity lasted almost 400 years. Without those books and the degree of ‘order’ that the churches provided to their population, the Dark Ages would probably have lasted so long that Islam would have swept across Europe from Spain when the Muslims crossed the Pyrennes into the rest of Europe.

I suggest they get with a good book, which would be any history book of the period from the end of the Roman Empire to the beginning of the Renaissance. Does it look familiar? It should.... it’s just modern Islam without the Internet. THAT is Christianity unleavened.

As I mentioned over at that other blog, this fellow seems to think that Christianity did nothing for and rather opposed the Renaissance. I think he’s fixating on his apparent hatred of christianity here as well.

Gutenberg invented moveable type because it was taking TOO long to turn out Bibles doing it by hand. His invention lead directly to the Renaissance.

It wasn’t until Aquinas set the genie of Aristotle loose in the Church that the dark chains forged by St. Augustine began to rust. And it was those ideas, not any stemming from Christianity itself, which authored the Enlightenment.

And Aquinas was a what? Pagan?

If Christanity deserves any credit at all, it’s in the fact that (after a protracted fight) it got out of the way of the new era, and then “adapted” to it (as the Pope recently put it); it allowed itself to be tamed. Islam fears that same fate.

The Wars of Religion were fought BY christians. Not by pagans, heathens and wiccans.

I think you need more history reading than most other people.

When did you graduate from high school?

When it came to World History, did you have an instructor like THIS guy?

  1. You should be able to start a very large bonfire with all the straw men you created and then attacked in this post.  Providing whatever readers you have with the actual *context* of these excerpts might lead them to understand the quoted statements better and see how much straw you actually used here:

Is that what we’re calling history these days? Interesting education system we’ve got going. At this rate, in due time, I’m confident that the schools will start teaching Islam....oops....they already are.
