I’m No Longer Surprised

...but I am disgusted and outraged.

This article In yesterday’s Chieftain details how official representatives of the Mexican government advised Mexican citizens in Pueblo on their rights if they’re picked up for illegal activities, like being in the country illegally.

Then,

Local immigration lawyer Guillermo Garibay offered additional advice: “No abra la puerta,” or don’t open the door when la migra, or immigration officials, come to your home. Garibay said, “Once you answer (the door), they can ask anybody for IDs.”

Since when does an officer of the court advise people who are not actually his clients on how to circumvent the law? (lawyer, n. one skilled in circumvention of the law. —Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary)

I will note here that I did a search on the Colorado Bar Association’s website, and did not find Mr. Garibay’s name. Either he has declined to join or he is not eligible to join.

Other reactions to this story are as follows:

I noticed that the Mexican officials did not suggest that illegals return to Mexico. Surely that is what a U.S. official would do, if the situation was reversed. Why didn’t they suggest this? Because they want the money the illegals send home. No doubt they are glad to be rid of some of the individuals as well. And why would they want a large block of voters to return and start demanding water they can drink straight from the tap and officials who don’t demand bribes for every little service, like they found in the U.S.?

While what the Mexican consulate people said and did was probably within acceptable limits, they nevertheless were tacitly encouraging their citizens to break U.S. laws by remaining in the country, which hardly seems friendly. One of the few times it’s allowed is during a war with the other country.

Another point:

Gail Montenegro, an ICE spokeswoman, said she knew of 15 arrests of fugitive aliens from Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Poland.

Why is this significant? A lot of people pretend efforts to control our borders are anti-Mexican, but of the 15 arrests, at least four, almost one-third, were NOT people from Mexico, even though more than two-thirds of the people in this country illegally probably are Mexicans.

Finally, this was a news story emphasizing the not-news that church members were sad and upset that some of their fellow members were arrested, and not on the real news that fugitive illegals had been arrested and that other illegals were being given advice so that they could continue to break the law.
